A friction handshake between engine and gearbox
The engine never stops spinning, but the wheels must — so something has to connect and disconnect them smoothly. The clutch squeezes a friction disc between the engine’s flywheel and a spring-loaded pressure plate. Pressed together they turn as one; pedal down, they separate and the engine spins freely.
What it does
Smoothly couples and decouples the engine from the gearbox for starting, stopping and shifting.

How it works
- The flywheel bolts to the crankshaft and provides a smooth, heavy friction surface.
- The friction disc, splined to the gearbox input shaft, is sandwiched against the flywheel by the pressure plate’s diaphragm spring.
- Pressing the pedal pushes the release bearing against the diaphragm spring fingers, levering the pressure plate away and freeing the disc.
- Easing the pedal out lets the disc slip briefly — that controlled slip is what lets you pull away from a stop without stalling.
- Small coil springs in the disc hub cushion the jolt of engagement.
