The part that takes the punch
The piston is the moving wall of the combustion chamber. It receives the full force of combustion on its crown and passes it through the wrist pin and connecting rod to the crankshaft, converting straight-line motion into rotation. It must seal high-pressure gas, survive 2,000 °C flame fronts, and weigh as little as possible.
What it does
Transfers combustion pressure to the crankshaft while sealing the cylinder and managing heat.

How it works
- Combustion pressure pushes down on the piston crown — up to several tonnes of force on an area the size of your palm.
- Three piston rings spring outward against the cylinder wall: the top two seal combustion gas, the bottom one scrapes excess oil back down.
- The wrist pin lets the connecting rod pivot as the crank rotates, so straight-line piston motion becomes circular crank motion.
- The big end of the rod clamps around the crankpin on a thin film of pressurized oil — the bearing shells never actually touch the crank in a healthy engine.
