A turbocharger is two fans on one shaft. Hot exhaust gas spins the turbine wheel; the compressor wheel on the other end of the shaft crams extra air into the engine. More air means more fuel can be burned, so a small engine can make the power of a much larger one — using energy that would otherwise blow out the tailpipe.
What it does
Increases engine power density by compressing intake air using recovered exhaust energy.

How it works
- Exhaust gas enters the turbine housing and spirals inward, spinning the turbine wheel up to ~250,000 rpm.
- A short shaft, floating on a film of engine oil, carries that spin to the compressor wheel.
- The compressor wheel flings intake air outward into a scroll-shaped housing, raising its pressure (boost) typically by 0.5–1.5 bar.
- The wastegate is a small valve that bypasses exhaust around the turbine to cap boost at a safe level.
- Compressed air heats up, so it usually passes through an intercooler before entering the engine.
