Steering Rack

Rotation in, translation out

Rack-and-pinion steering is beautifully direct: the steering wheel spins a small pinion gear, the pinion walks along a toothed bar (the rack), and the bar pushes tie rods that swivel the front wheels. Nearly every modern car steers this way, usually with electric assistance.

What it does

Converts steering-wheel rotation into the side-to-side motion that pivots the front wheels.

Mounted across the car behind the front axle, linked to both front wheels.

How it works

  1. The steering column ends in a pinion gear meshed with teeth cut into the rack bar.
  2. Turning the wheel rotates the pinion, which slides the rack left or right inside its housing.
  3. Tie rods at each end of the rack connect to the steering knuckles through ball joints, accommodating suspension movement.
  4. In electric power steering, a torque sensor measures your effort and a motor adds assistance directly to the rack or column.
  5. Rubber bellows boots seal the rack ends against water and grit.
